In 2006, Brian Devaney had three dreams of special needs kids playing a sport on a field. He knew at that moment he could not ignore God's calling. During that time, he was president of The Rotary Club of Corpus Christi Evening and the club was trying to determine a community project to undertake. They wanted to make an impact in the Coastal Bend. Brian Devaney searched and searched. He found The Miracle League in Conyers, GA on the Rotary International website. He requested and received their information, watched a video with tears streaming down his face and knew this is what he had been dreaming about. He presented it to the club, and the non-profit was formed. From that point, and for four years after, the Brian and other board members solicited partners and donors.
On April, 28, 2010 the groundbreaking occurred and construction began on the $750,000 non-obstructive rubber turf field featuring a concession stand, family changing rooms, covered bleachers and stadium lights on what is now Salinas Park on Airport Rd. At the time it was the only field of its kind south of San Antonio. The season opener was the following March 2011. And so it began and continues, over a decade later. We expanded our sports programs from initially two baseball seasons to two baseball seasons, boccia, basketball, kickball, tennis, and flag football Fall 2023.
We encourage all families with special needs family members, young or adult, to sign up and play. Encourage a co-worker, friend, someone at your church to check us out. There are approximately 30,000 individuals with some type of special need in the Coastal Bend. There is no excuse. Physical activity, socialization, and team play will fill them with happiness, joy, laughter, excitement, and fun. So, if you know someone, tell them about us! Encourage them to sign up, and show up to see them play.
Our seasons run 6-8 weeks each beginning in February and concluding in December.
